The Vimshottari system divides a human lifetime into a 120-year cycle spread across nine planets. Each planet governs a fixed span of years and brings its own flavour to whichever area of your chart it rules. Your birth nakshatra determines which planet you start with and how many years of that period remain at birth.

Every Mahadasha is further divided into nine sub-periods called Antardasha or Bhukti. Each sub-period is ruled by one of the nine planets in the same Vimshottari sequence. So a 19-year Saturn Mahadasha contains Saturn/Ketu, Saturn/Venus, Saturn/Sun, and so on. The sub-lord colours how the main period expresses itself. Saturn Mahadasha with a Venus Antardasha tends to bring structured growth in relationships and finances. How to Read Your Result
Once you calculate your Mahadasha above, note three things: which planet is running, which sub-period (Antardasha) is active, and which houses those planets rule in your natal chart. A Jupiter Mahadasha will feel very different for someone with Jupiter ruling the 9th and 12th house compared to someone where Jupiter rules the 2nd and 5th. The dasha period activates the significations of that planet as modified by its house rulership, placement, and any conjunctions or aspects in your birth chart.
