Planet Transits Today

Real-time sidereal positions for all 9 grahas.

Gochar (गोचर) literally means planetary transits, the real-time movement of planets through the zodiac. Unlike Western astrology which uses the tropical zodiac, Vedic astrology tracks planets against the actual stars (sidereal zodiac), which differs by about 24°.

What this tool does

We fetch current planetary positions from our real-time ephemeris (NASA JPL data) and display them in the Vedic sidereal framework, showing the sign (Rashi), nakshatra, and degree for each of the 9 classical Vedic planets.

How it works

  1. 01Positions are fetched from our real-time sidereal ephemeris
  2. 02The Lahiri ayanamsha is applied to convert tropical to sidereal
  3. 03Rashi (sign), Nakshatra, and degree are calculated for each planet
  4. 04Retrograde status is flagged where applicable

Planetary positions fetched from Swiss Ephemeris. Lahiri ayanamsha (~24°07') applied for sidereal conversion. Sign and nakshatra computed from ecliptic longitude. Retrograde status derived from heliocentric velocity.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between sidereal and tropical positions?

The tropical zodiac used in Western astrology is based on the seasons and the Sun's position at the Spring equinox. The sidereal zodiac used in Vedic astrology is based on the actual constellations. They differ by approximately 24° (the ayanamsha), meaning your Western Sun sign may differ from your Vedic one.

What is Ayanamsha?

Ayanamsha is the angular difference between the tropical and sidereal starting points. Gochar uses the Lahiri ayanamsha, the most widely accepted value in modern Jyotish. Currently approximately 24°07'.

Are Rahu and Ketu real planets?

Rahu and Ketu are the lunar nodes, the points where the Moon's orbit intersects the ecliptic. They are not physical bodies but are treated as shadow planets (Chhaya Grahas) in Vedic astrology. They always move retrograde and are always 180° apart.

Is this free?
