What this tool does
Gochar calculates Panchang from real-time sidereal planetary positions using Swiss Ephemeris. Enter your location and date to get accurate Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana, Sunrise, Sunset, and Rahu Kala.
How it works
- 01Select your location and date
- 02We fetch the exact Sun and Moon positions for that moment
- 03Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (Moon's star), Yoga (Sun+Moon combo), and Karana (half-tithi) are calculated
- 04Sunrise/Sunset times are computed for your latitude/longitude
Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, and Karana calculated from real-time Sun and Moon positions using Swiss Ephemeris. Lahiri ayanamsha applied for sidereal conversion. Sunrise and sunset computed from geographic coordinates.
Understanding the Five Limbs of Panchang
Every day in the Vedic calendar is described by five elements — the “five limbs” that together paint a complete picture of the day’s quality.
- Tithi — The Lunar Day
- One of 30 lunar days in a month, each spanning 12° of angular separation between the Sun and Moon. Tithis govern which activities are auspicious — Pratipada (1st) favours beginnings; Purnima (full moon) amplifies; Amavasya (new moon) is for inner work.
- Nakshatra — The Moon’s Star
- The 27 nakshatras divide the ecliptic into 13°20′ segments. The Moon transits one nakshatra every ~27 hours. Each nakshatra has a ruling deity, a nature (deva, manushya, or rakshasa), and a quality that colours the day’s emotional and practical tone.
- Yoga — The Sun-Moon Combination
- Calculated from the sum of the Sun and Moon’s longitudes, divided into 27 equal parts. Shubha yogas like Siddha, Amrita, and Shiva are considered highly favourable; Vishkambha, Vyaghata, and Vajra are avoided for new ventures.
- Karana — The Half-Tithi
- Each Tithi is divided into two Karanas of ~6° each. There are 11 Karanas total — 4 fixed (Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga, Kimstughna) and 7 repeating (Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, Vanija, Vishti). Vishti (Bhadra) is universally inauspicious.
- Vara — The Day of the Week
- Each weekday is ruled by a planet: Sunday (Sun), Monday (Moon), Tuesday (Mars), Wednesday (Mercury), Thursday (Jupiter), Friday (Venus), Saturday (Saturn). The ruling planet’s nature colours the entire day and affects which activities succeed.
